The Open University and SRI Education identifies ten progressing educational trends in a new report. We at eLearningworld simplified this development into four approaches that will have great impact the coming years: the Science Approach, the Personalization Approach, the Analytics Approach and the Informal Approach. These four approaches work independently and combined to transform learning and teaching into the 21st Century’s educational requirements. In most cases learning technologies is the driving force that makes it all work. Below we briefly describe the Science Approach and the Personalization Approach and in the beginning of the next week the analysis of the Analytics Approach and the Informal Approach will be published.
Science approach
The science approach combines three trends that the report identifies “Context-based learning”, “Learning by doing science with remote labs” and “Learning through argumentation”. Basically this means that learners learn the scientific method much earlier than today where trends both can work as an empirical pedagogical process or ad hoc-projects. Context-based learning means learning from experience in different environments, which means interacting with the surroundings, making notes and exploring the world. It could be a museum, research centre or some other environment that produces different perspectives for learning and it is either in the real- or in the virtual world. These findings then in some cases can be taken to remote labs to hands on make tests and develop in the trial and error approach of the lab. And in the next step present and arguing and make claims about the findings. This is a much more powerful method to reach understanding among all learners in comparison of 20th Century pedagogy of instruction and tests.
Personalization approach
The personalization approach combines two trends from the report: Adaptive teaching and Embodied learning. The
goal with education is not to walk down a distinct learning path with a test at the end of the road to say if you managed to fill you up with the right knowledge or not, like in the 20th Century. The goal as Leonardo Da Vinci explained is to reach an understanding about complex fields and develop skills to learn. Since people are different and thereby also learn differently, different learning paths are required to reach understanding for each individual. Learning technologies dramatically improves the prospects to form personalized paths through the educational content and with different pedagogies. Embodied learning is here a great method for refinement of this personalized road to new knowledge, understanding and skills.
In the second part of this analysis we will find more arguments to why traditional tests at a fixed time and location will be a method of the past and why curriculums of today does not fit the society’s required knowledge, understandings and skills.
