The Irish Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, TD, recently has announced a €210m investment in digital technology in schools. The funding will be used to implement a digital strategy in schools during the coming five years. This includes dedicated multi-annual funding to schools to invest in technology, integration of digital skills in the curriculum, develop opportunities for students to take an in-depth ICT course at Leaving Cert and embed ICT skills as part of initial teacher education and ongoing training for teachers etc. However, in Coláiste Bhaile Chláir (CBC), a post-primary school in Claregalway, a digital strategy is already put in practice. This includes that printed books and even ebooks is replaced with Microsoft Surface tablets and pupils and teachers work together to generate resources to each subject. Principal Alan Mongey explains in an interview in Irish Independent “We wanted something that would engage the students in the process of learning, where students could gather their own knowledge and present that to their teachers and peers.” Source: Irish Independent and Press Release Ministry for Education and Skills
