Signs of the time: On what Millennials think of 5G and transformation of education

Millennials, the generation born between the 1980s to the beginning of the 21th Century, are more demanding than other generations when it comes to mobile- and internet technology, this year’s Ericsson Mobility Report shows. As this generation not know a world without ICT they are now taking the lead towards a 5G-future, both when it comes to digital networks and services. Since the key findings in the report is that millennials is leading a clear shift in video consumption trends. On average they are streaming 2.5 times more video than those aged over 45. They are also a driver for faster improvement and transformation where less than half of millennial smartphone users say their mobile broadband quality expectations has been satisfied. More than 30% of millennial smartphone users name a factor beyond better coverage and speed as their most important 5G expectation, which means advanced views on services.

One such field is that early virtual reality (VR) adopters is expecting 5G to play a significant role in enriching the shared VR experience. And as the line between Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality rapidly diminish into a merged reality (MR) stereoscopic six degrees of freedom (6DoF) and holographic video is appearing by the horizon in the eyes of the millennials. In this spirit the IT University in Copenhagen is changing the name on one of its most popular programmes, when the Digital Design and Communication Bachelor programme now is changing name to Digital Design and Interactive Technologies, as the focus increasingly will be set on technology. In order to apply to the updated programme that starts in the autumn 2018, the applicant must have gone through programming or database education. However, the university is offering applicants that do not meet these requirements a complementing summer course before the term starts.

The purpose with the update of the programme is to improve the understanding of technologies designers are using, and at the same time learn to develop prototypes on a more advanced level.
