Learning how the brain works when learning is an important part of improving pedagogy and to help pupils learn how to learn. Unfortunately, this area is overlooked, according to Barbara Oakley, professor of engineering at Oakland University, California. She says: “That is when kids start falling off as they think they’re just not a maths person which just isn’t true at all. They just don’t know how to learn effectively and so they just give up.” In her new book co-authored with Alistair McConville, deputy head of Bedales School, professor Oakley points at the institutional inertia to improve teacher’s understanding about neuroscience. And she claims that the basic method for effective learning is that introduce defined length study sessions and then allow students return to a few minutes of daydreaming with music or video etc., to then continue with another session.
