New research shows that young children learn through using multiple senses simultaneously. This requires a learning environment with hands-on objects in order to combine the sense of touch with the senses of vision, hearing, taste and smell. This trains the sensory memory and building a foundation for solving problems and to create novel ideas from current ideas. This foundation of cognitive skills is from where we develop our skills and knowledge through school and all our lives. Caitrin Blake of Concordia University Nebraska comments: “By providing students with materials that they can physically manipulate, play with and explore, teachers help them learn more about the world and develop crucial skills that they will utilize later in life.” With this background the old teaching-by-telling pedagogy seems to be more of an obstacle to how we generally learn.
