What changes history? What makes it turn in a new direction? On the micro-level it is decisions. From this perspective the award-winning Harvard Professor David Moss uses a case-based pedagogical method to teach history. Moss introduces the method in the following way: “The best ideas come out of tension, out of disagreeing. Tension is what ensures the best ideas win out.” This is integrating the student in the historical context where the student not only learns history but also improves decision-making skills from historical scenarios. Basically the case method starts with an introduction of a concentrated story of an historical event but without the outcome. The second step is a profound discussion in class including different possible scenarios of the outcome. Then when all the details have been discussed the real outcome is presented. Engagement in history and decision-making skills development is the educational result. Source: The Atlantic
